Reactive [Nov. 10th, 2010|10:22 am]
It seems that US security policy is mostly reactive. The shoe bomber comes along, so we make everyone take off their shoes. Someone tries to use a liquid explosive, so no fluids over 5 oz. Underwear bomber brings up full body pat-downs. Now they have been banning toner cartridge shipments.

Trinity [Nov. 8th, 2010|08:53 am]
Chaotic order, depth, networks, mystery. As I recall, 3 quarks make the electron, 3 others make a proton and neutron.

same stuff on FB [Jul. 19th, 2010|01:32 pm]
This was an interesting weekend. Friday, I worked on a birthday card for Sha. She was going to spend most of the weekend with a women's prayer group, but ended up only doing Friday. Friday night - listening to inspiring stories from the Amazon with Nilton, Cleucy and Marcos. They are living in faith day to day. Saturday, I joined the robotics team for a bbq before DaVinci Days. A discussion about what could people do if they truly followed their passions, not chained to a job just for the health insurance (if they are so lucky).   DaVinci Days here in Corvallis gives license for people to do that. Chalk art on the sidewalk shows children's primitive art, and very well executed chalk-paintings. People in costumes, folks on 2 story bikes. I brought my sketchbook, and had to overcome a little awkwardness before starting to draw strangers. I approach a guy with an interesting face, and asked if I could sketch him. He smiles and say no thanks, but I could tell he didn't understand. No English, he says. I gesture a drawing and he still smiles and says no thanks. So I start a sketch of people across the street. That intrigues him after awhile, so then he comes and asks how much it costs. No money, I tell him. So I then was able to create a charcoal sketch of him.
He, naturally, was wary of some guy wanting to scrutinize his face, but in the end I think he was pleased to have it done. There is some threshold that we each have to overcome before we do what we are called to do. On Sunday, Marv was sharing about his journey with his daughter's health issues. At the mayo clinic, people are at the stage where how they look in public does not matter, so they feel free to sit around a piano with strangers and sing songs.
Also had a great Saturday night at George's poker party.

recycle [May. 6th, 2010|03:14 pm]

So - last fall I ran our second-hand-previously-was-a-racing-ride-a-mower into a rock that wacked the mower deck off its pins. With the tax refund, got a new John Deere . Cuts like a charm and bags - the last mower had no bagger.
But we were wondering - how do we get rid of the old one?
We also had leftover scrap metal from our remodel. Sha heard a rap on the door one morning last week, and there were two African (judging by the accent) guys who wanted to know if they could have the metal. She asked then how did you know we had metal to recycle? They just saw it driving by... we live 6 miles out of town, and they were from Salem (another 50 miles). Apparently, they drive around looking for thing to sell for scrap, recycle. So she told them they could have it if they also took our old lawn mower, and dryer - and that they would recycle them. So they cleaned us out and I think made us all happy. Don't know how much the scrap metal was worth, but judging by the electric wire that tweakers pull from public bike paths, it must be a few hundred bucks.

Sketchup and Kerkythea [Apr. 14th, 2010|09:54 am]
Been playing with Kerkythea - another free 3D app.
It has many advanced render features, photon mapping, physically correct skies, etc.
Work in progress of a riverboat, section cut.

Cooliris Media Wall [Mar. 25th, 2010|07:59 pm]
This worked on a Mac but kills IE in my PC , so won't subject you to it.
It later killed Firefox on Mac.

new camera [Mar. 1st, 2010|10:07 am]
Sha got me a Canon Powershot G11 - a decent prosumer camera. I haven't read all about it, but so far, I like the autobracket feature. Much nicer than my last one, which had major a ccd problem.
Below the break is the new island in our kitchen. Above it is Sha's creative solution for some metalwork - two peices from the craft store.

Halfway to 90 [Feb. 24th, 2010|09:00 am]
Just had my 45th bday. Somehow this one seems to be a milestone. Every other year I just feel a year older, but this year is bigger. I think it may have to do with my "fifths" always fall on a new decade, and my "oughts" fall in the middle of decades.
I first noticed this in 1985, when I was 20. When beginning my 20's the 80's were half over. At the beginning of the 90's, my 20's were half gone. 2000 was comfortable at 35, 40 was no problem in 2005.

Bondo sure does smell [Nov. 24th, 2009|11:50 am]
I don't know how my brother stands all these fumes! My Bro Pete has a custom paint shop / bodyshop where there is all kinds of carcinogens floating in the air. Bondo smells like rubber cement on steroids. Ugh. For that matter, how do manicurists survive? The few times I've been into a manicure shop (for my wife, not me) I can't stay more than 2 minutes. Toxic fumes...
